iPhone 13 Pro Max review – first impressions: Apple’s best ever camera is a total joy
Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max is the company’s most powerful iPhone to date – complete with professional-style photography features and a ridiculous new battery life

Apple latest line of iPhones are just days away from going on sale, with this year’s Pro handsets boasting the company’s “three most powerful cameras ever” amid a range of new features focusing nearly solely on photography.
Like last year’s online-only announcement, Apple opted to announce four new iPhones in three different sizes, the 5.8-inch iPhone 13 mini, the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Note: This review has been written after just a few days with the handset, meaning it contains my early impressions rather than final thoughts. It will be updated at a later date once I’ve had the time to put it through its paces properly – namely testing performance, battery life, durability and the new photo/video updates.

What does the iPhone 13 Pro look like?
This year’s wave of models opt for sophisticated camera software updates over any major design changes: the equivalent of the ‘S’ branding Apple used to apply to new models with less-radical updates than the previous year’s releases.
A sharper camera system with better performance in low light conditions, a brighter, smoother screen and significantly improved battery life are among the key promises Apple has made for the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max follows closely in the design footsteps of last year’s Pro models: stainless steel edges, matte glass back and four finishes: graphite (dark grey), gold, silver and sierra blue: a pretty pearlescent slate blue.

There’s few design surprises to be found here: it still takes a lightning cable charger (still no USB-C – yet), there’s no headphone jack and the power and volume buttons are all in the same place. As ever, it’s a beautifully designed device that’s easily the most stylish-looking phone on the market, provided you’re a fan of larger screens.
While the Pro Max is kitted out with the same Ceramic Shield finish that claims to be tougher than any smartphone glass, I still managed to scratch it in two places within the first couple of hours of use. As I can’t pinpoint a particular cause of the scratches, I can’t blame the efficacy of the material, but it’s still deeply annoying.
Talking of screens, Apple’s new ProMotion technology doubles the refresh rate of last year’s 12 series’ 60Hz screens to 120Hz across both Pro models. While this may not sound like a big deal, higher refresh rates are increasingly becoming a benchmark by which to measure flagship handsets.

The higher a device’s refresh rate, the more often a screen is refreshed each second, meaning that motions from scrolling, swiping, watching videos or playing games appear significantly smoother and clearer. This update is one that will delight Apple watchers concerned that iPhones are being left for dust by the latest generation of Android handsets – making playing games in particular feel super responsive and fluid.
